Volunteering

Histology staff in pathology laboratory at Kijabe Hospital (2010).

If you are reading this, then you likely have some connection to or have heard about the work being done at Kijabe Hospital.  Kijabe Hospital is a Christian hospital operated by the African Inland Church.  Interestingly, about half of medical care received in Africa and Kenya are through Christian hospitals.  Most of these hospitals rely heavily on full time missionary physicians and/or volunteers to provide care.  Kijabe hospital is similar, in that about half of the staff are Kenyan with the other half a mixture of full time missionary physicians and short term volunteers.

Volunteer pathologists are at the heart of the support needs for the Kijabe Hospital Pathology Laboratory.  The hospital has had a functioning anatomic pathology lab since 1997, which has been staffed by Kenyan histology trained staff and volunteer pathologists (most from the United States).  Unfortunately, it has been challenging to staff the laboratory for all 12 months during the year.

Volunteers have typically served in one month rotations (although some can come for only two weeks) that are coordinated with Samaritan's Purse (Boone, NC).  Mary Everett is the coordinator for pathologists at Kijabe Hospital for Samaritan's Purse (SP).  Check out our volunteer pathologist page to meet some of our volunteers.
